Small plot
This is a spot where we were going to do a plot in earlier this year, but didn't get around to it, so we just decided to do a fall plot. Yesterday we planted some Throw & Grow( Rye Grass, Forage Clover, and Brassica) we also mixed in Chicory with it. The plot is about a 1/2 acre in size.(Can't see it all in the picture)
Anyone ever use the throw and grow?

Re: Small plot
Looks like a nice spot. I've tried Throw and Grow a few times and never had the deer eat the rye grass. It will be interesting to see if your deer eat it, since I'm sure you have a higher deer population. Ted Nugent plants alot of it in Texas and Michigan. I'd throw a bag of winter wheat or cereal rye on the plot for guaranteed deer attraction. My deer do love chicory, especially in Sept-Oct.
I hate to tell you this, but if your wanting a perennial clover/chicory spot than that rye grass could be a big problem. You will need a grass selective herbicide to kill it in the spring. If the rye grass goes to seed it will become nothing more than a noxious weed. Farmers and land managers spend years trying to kill off and rid their fields of annual rye grass. Once it matures and the seed makes it into the seed bank it's very hard to get rid of, much like Johnson Grass. With your cold winters it may be killed off and not come back in the spring. If it does come back though no matter what DO NOT let it mature and go to seed.

Re: Small plot
Thanks for the tip
The field just behind the foodplot(Can be seen in the pic) is overrun w/different grasses. Most of it almost looks like the Johnson Grass, but still a bit different. If not cut, it'll grow up to 7-8ft. most of it's about 3ft tall now, but some spots are a little over 4ft. They're not gonna cut it this year that i know of, so it should be 8acres of bedding this fall Last year where we put in a 4 acre plot the stuff took over the plot. It's coming up again this year in the same spot (Deer bed in it alot)

Re: Small plot
Heres a pic of how the grass looks like. I did noticed some johnson grass close by. Could this be some that hasn't fully matured yet?
Heres a pic of some clover coming up already

Re: Small plot
The grass in your pic is Fox tail. I have it on my place and it's not much different than Johnson grass except for the big head. Like you my deer love to bed in it.
What brand of chicory did you plant? I've used Tecomate, Whitetail Institute, and Bio logic chicory all with good results. I can buy it by the pound local for a third of the price, but have not been pleased with it's germination or growth.

Re: Small plot
I've seen the plot mixer advertised, but not looked at it in person. Is there more than 1 pound of chicory in the bottle and does it have more than one kind of chicory in it?

Re: Small plot
It's only 1 kind of Chicory, not sure how much is in a bottle, but 1bottle is suppost to cover 1/4 acre when planted alone.

Re: Small plot
Thanks! I have a new small plot just over an 1/8 of an acre and would like to make it a perennial chicory plot. Keep me updated on how your Evolved Harvest chicory is growing, I may try planting it the first of Sept. Keep an eye on your plot because where there is clover and chicory there will be groundhogs. They'll flock to your plot, especially during the fall getting ready for winter. If you like to shoot them you'll have plenty of opportunities. I've had them 3ft in front of the blind inhaling chicory. Same goes for coons. I assume they graze on the plots since we get regular pics of them in every clover plot at night and even during the day. Could make for some good trapping opportunities.

Re: Small plot
How's your plot doing Jeff? I was at Bass Pro and Walmart and neither had the Evolved Harvest Chicory additive. They had the Biologic chicory, but I bought a bag of Trophy Rock Four65 instead.

Re: Small plot
Plot looks thick and lush! Looks like brassica in your hand. Chicory has a long, narrow, smooth edge leaf.
