Picky turkey hunters? Empty Picky turkey hunters?

Everyone probally has passed up a few small bucks ! But do any of you pass up on turkeys if there beards are to short? I have passed up a jake or two but never an actual gobbler! I was just curious how you guys decide which bird to take! The last turkey I shot was actually a jake ! He Put on an awesome show! Gobbling his head off the best he could and strutting around like he owned the place ! I would probally have passed him up but after that show I took him and I was more then happy with him! Plus he tasted better then any old gobbler Smile

I pass jakes and have passed an adult that had "beard rot". his beard was maybe 3 inches. I got a rule. if they come in and have a full fan and a "long beard" they get shot. does not matter if the beard is 8 or 12 inches. I do not try to look at the spurs.

I was thinking about posting this same question. We get 2 turkey tags and if a jake comes by and there are not any gobblers near then he's catching a Thunderhead to the head. I'll hold out for a decent gobbler with the 2nd tag. Our season closes everyday at 1pm, so we're only able to hunt 3 weekends and most springs the turkey aren't even around to hunt, so I'm not to picky. Most of our kills come in the fall during bow season when you are allowed to shoot hens. October is also a month long firearm season here where you can shoot 2 birds of either sex.

I don't normally shoot jakes, but I have on occasion.

With only one turkey under my name it would be tempting to shoot a nice jake Smile

I have shot a fair share of jakes, but now I "try" to hold out for Pappy, lol... I have been blessed with older birds, also... Depends on how late in the season it is.

I had probably shot 10-15 turkeys before I started getting real picky to the point of trying HARD to not shoot jakes. They are now safe until the last day of season or if they make the mistake of gobbling and drumming like a mature bird on their way in and then just poke their head up over the edge of the hill like one did last year.
