Survival Outing Empty Survival Outing

Post by BEAST Thu May 24, 2012 9:42 pm

I just got back from a campout in which no food was taken. (all except for some apples and they were only for just in case we couldnt get food.) We, Trapfever, Pudgester, and I, took a .22, 2 bows, and 3 rods as weapons, a knife a person and matches. Also 3 pans. The main point was really to see what we could eat that was strange. We ate fish, groundhogs, squirrels, birds, and a frog. We were standing at our fire when i looked up and saw a gray squirrel coming toward me at 20 yds away. I told the other guys to get the gun. As i was waiting till they would shoot the squirrel i saw it was with 3 others. We shot 3 of them but the biggest got away. We also had enough interaction with turkeys. As we walked in we saw two hens move across the field, later as we were walking back from fishing we saw a tom out strutting in the field (we tried to move into position to take it with a bow, it is season here, but it left to fast), we saw some more running across the field, and also i spooked a hen that was sitting on 12 eggs. We also smoked fish for coon bait next year. I know to say i survived one day is kind of dumb but it was fun and a good experience. My rankings of the meat is like this. #1-Squirrel=tastes like grilled chicken #2-bird-like squirrel just a little tougher #3-frog-like squirrel just had a weird texture #4-Woodchuck=tasted like beef just really tough #5-fish=bland as sand and had a weird texture. I'm sure the fish could have been done better but they were process on a creek bank. for liquid we drank out of the creek. I believe trapfever will post some pics of our food. It looked pretty enticing. We did have water bottles and drank boiled water. We cooked our meat through and i think we were safe. And yeah, next time i will go with different eyes and be more prepared. I had a blast though and we will see if any of us comes down with something if so i will be much more cautious next time. Also i should add that it was such a small stream that a beaver would of had to walk the whole way up it.

Your right about the fish, Galen. The one on the far left is a bluegill.

I am not the biggest fan of fish but i can eat them if they are cooked and prepared good! but im sure that if i would ever need to eat fish for a survival situation they would taste better than anything i ever ate before Smile
