anyone know anything about water wells and Iron
My water well of 15 years has all of a sudden started putting out iron colored water, looks clean then turns as it get air,I told it's iron bacteria from my well company, the well is 800 feet deep they told me to dump bleach down the well and let it sit then run it water tap until I can smell bleach then let it sit for 24 hours then turn on all the taps and let the well run and flush all of it out. So it seemed to work for a few days but it is back again. I dumped 2 1/2 gallons down the well the first go around and tablets.
I am going to pull the last of my hair out... so far it has ruined all the whites clothes and we are down to using only one shower and toilet in the house over having to clean it every day and you cant drink or cook with the water. so what happened to this well? A water treatment guy is coming to test this week a friend told me I need a iron filter treatment system.
I am not a happy camper

Must have been a result of the heat and drought? Do you have neighbors close that might have the same problem? No doubt the solution to the problem will put a dent in the bank account. Keep us updated and Good Luck!
City Utilities sprayed a chemical around their sub-station across the street from me and contaminated the ground, so they had to put a filter system in everyones well. The filtered water made me sick and wasted alot of water when it would backwash. Most everyone unhooked the system and went back to straight well water.

I had that issue and never used the bleach idea though. 3 houses were pulling off the well. The iron particles were so bad they would clog the screens on the wash machine. I purchased a water filtration canister from Home Cheapo (which was a large one) and added it in line on the out flow of the pump and it stopped the issue. This model had a light that would illuminate when the filter needs changed or the length of life has been obtained. I think it was every 90 days.
Filters were a bit pricey but, it eliminated another drill and whatever would cost a higher price.
Hope this helps you out bro.

I have a whole house filtering system that our well goes thru as it enter the house, The water if I fill a clear glass looks clear when first fill it but after it sits for 20 min it looks like (tang) the drink. I am told it is iron bacteria that needs oxygen to start growing and the bleech should kill it,I am going to try double the dose and remove the pump cover to the well and run my garden hose into it and let it run overnight, then open the outlets until I can smell bleach then let it set for a couple of days, may have to go to a hotel for a couple days.

Was that water guidance from the water dept. in your closest city? Just curious. I'm sure you've googled that topic for answers too. Maybe an aerator is needed if you say it needs oxygen. Could get pricey there and would have to be done in a temp controlled area so it doesn't freeze up there in the winter.
Gallons of bleach constantly will add up $$$ too.
Maybe there's a better answer from a water technician at your water works local to your area. I'd try them if you haven't already.
I'll ask some guys I worked with at our water works dept. and see too.

Did they have any idea why your water all of sudden started having problems?

The guy was telling me that the drought we had this year combined with the recent hard rains have pushed the iron from underground veins into the well. We do have a lot of red clay type soil here so I guess it's possible .
