Snow cam worries
Anyone holding off like me on checking cams in the snow in fear of my tracks in the snow leading trespassers to my trailcams? Way too much human traffic with shed hunters and trapping going on for me right now with snow on the ground.
The cams I have out are hidden well so I am not worried but I am not going to give them a map also.

Re: Snow cam worries
I'm with you. I never check my cams if there is snow on the ground. And after having my Moultrie M80XT stolen last weekend, I'm very leery of putting my cams out again. I'm rethinking where and when I put any of my cams out. Having a camera stolen really really really $ucks!!
Re: Snow cam worries
In some places I wont walk close to any of them. In others I snow shoe their so I make a huge track. The ones that I wont check I wait for a snow storm or strong wind to blow out my tracks.

Re: Snow cam worries
I went out yesterday and set one while looking at some trails in the snow,I seen a spot I liked and did not see any human tracks in the 1/2 mile walk so I set my ltl acorn with python lock and brushed it in a little before I left. Hope it's there in a few weeks.

That's good camo work. I may start doing that with my cameras. All my high end cams (the $200 and higher ones) are going in lock boxes.
Re: Snow cam worries
I have cam setter's remorse today these acorn cams are $$ not sure what I was thinking? I put two of these out

They should make an oversized plastic form that looks like tree bark that you set over the cam which would turn your cam into just a round lump like you see growing on alot trees.

I know a lot of homebrew guys use that liquid nails goop to conceal them to look like rough bark. The only issue with that in my area is all the trees don't look the same and it would stand out like a sore thumb. Box or lump sizes for the cams would have to vary also for the trees in your selected area.
Thieves make life difficult for the honest man and his hobbies especially when it concerns electronic devices. I feel for you guys who have folks just wandering around aimlessly on the land you post your cams on. I had one stolen in the creek last Spring because the damn fool assumed nobody owned the creek just to the banks on each side. WRONG....... and trespassing at that! That day still burns my arse even though I got my camera back unharmed.
I wish I could've helped SH with his ordeal because of the fact and he's a bud of mine.
YOUR CAMS ARE NEVER SAFE SO, USE THE MILITARY TATIC OF MASTERING COVER AND CONCEALMENT. TRAIL CAM1 HAS A GREAT START SHOWN HERE IN HIS PICTURE.

Re: Snow cam worries
I lay awake each night now thinking of ways to hide my cameras. I have a few thoughts. I'm seriously thinking of abandoning my old method of putting my cams at waist level. I'm now thinking up high. At least 10 feet or higher. I have a folding 10' aluminum ladder I could easily take with me to my camera spots. Stay tuned.
Re: Snow cam worries
Always remember when jacking those babies that high up and angling them downward limits the PIR sensing ability to a tight zone or seeing distance. Your changing the horizontal plane or angle of axis and will only see in a downward "V" look. The Acorn might be better with the side PIR's having better sensing but, your still at a downward angle or look.
I put the Acorn and the SG 560 as pictured on the shooting tower @ 20' up and the pictures were like looking at the animals from a Google Earth look. I dropped it down to approx. 8' and they looked pretty good at this height. Check it out.
DROPPED TO THE 8' OR SO MARK AND LOOKED GREAT. MMS SENT IMAGES SHOWN HERE
