Re: Wait time
Well it usually depends on the shot!! But I would give a big mature buck a few hrs before you track him even if it was a good shot, Unless you see him drop!! But If you think it was a gut shot back out and wait till the next day If your not sure about the shot back out.

Re: Wait time
Lumenok arrows can help tremendously. Bow hunting requires a precision shot as you know. Gut shooting or any other area besides the vital area should be avoided at any costs. Too many variables you instantly add in the equation when a bad shot is taken.
I also realize the deer can bolt in a instant a cause a shot like that along with "Buck Fever"
I'll concur with the others on the time waiting sequence for locating it. If on public land your odds are against you severely of another hunter having a shot at it or it dropping dead in his location. Swamps and bogs are a favorite place to run and "hide n die" and weather is no help if it's less than clear outside.

Re: Wait time
He headed right into a pretty thick swamp. Some places you couldnt see a few feet in front of you most places I had to crawl and had to wonder how the heck he made it through thier. After three days of searching it had to rain. Sure does leave a bad feeling in your stomach.

It's anybody's guess how those deer just slide through those tough entanglements. I wonder how they don't have more broken legs, sprains etc. rolling full bore it the thick crap. Here the underbrush is unreal and the briars are like spider webs and truly unforgiving to humans anyway.
This one didn't fair so well it appears. Barbed wire or something got it.

I can't really tell brah. I captured these images last fall while I was dispatched with the back issue. Haven't had the cams in the power line area for some time now.
It looks pretty rough but, still couldn't resist ole Ghostman's supreme blends!
