Heavens no. A guy that has retired in Virginia Richards custom rifles had this posted. I was looking for a smaller grain 300 bullet and he had a 125gr 300WSM for varmint hunting cranking 4000fps! I use 165gr and up for big game hunting.
I bet I can hit their monkey _ss like that though. I just prefer the 300 from the military. Check and see what kind of gun Chris, the killed sniper used for his 150 confirmed kills!

This takes care of anything I need shot!! It doesn't walk or run far if even that. That big hog went 30' and dropped with the 165gr ballistic tip. Usually never a exit wound on big game even deer. That tip makes the lead shroom out like a jagged saw blade and the internal bleeding stays inside and drowns them to death. A side arm and a sharp blade is a must too.

No need to look for a blood trail as they won't go far if you hit the vital area, guaranteed! In fact, I shot one of those bucks on the power line right dead in the white butt patch when it flagged at 250yds and it cartwheeled, A$$ over head when hit and dropped.

Nothing special here: Synthetic Winchester 300WSM - 3x12WA Simmons - 2000yd+ Aim Spot red laser pointer - Bipod legs (optional)

It's the same size gun Ray, your dads cartridge is longer than mine.
They come in 3 flavors now:
1. 300Win mag (long cart.)
2. 300WSM (short mag cart.)
3. 300WSSM (super short cart.)
The short versions were made to shorten the bolting action of the bolt in chambering another round quickly.
Look at your dads bullet and see how long that baby is!
They are all bad a$$ regardless. Known as the "Baddest mushroom in the woods"
Your Pop has a damn good rifle you might need to inherit one day!

The cartridge is real long!! I can see where a shorter cartridge would make for a faster second shot

I shot and bolted one on the power line takedown I posted. the first one dropped like a dead mule dropping a wagon when hit, then the 2nd taller rack 6 decided he was going to bolt off and flag me in the fog which was the wrong move.
Remember how foggy it was too. I had that bad boy ejected and reloaded still shouldered and still looking through the scope. I saw the flag as it faded off into the fog and I was dead on his donkey! KABOOM and the last thing I saw was his A$$ go over his head like a cartwheel and drop.

Upon inspection of that one, his whole rear pelvic area was destroyed. To avoid any excitement or buck fever during the shots I pretend their insurgents from Iraq. It's them or me so that's real easy, I'm coming home alive so you can figure the rest. You gotta decide quickly in one shot, re-chambered and available for his buddy who now wants you even more! Enough said there.

That's a great choice too. Nice long straight shooter too! I like a lot of calibers but, choose the 300 from the military and I'm a big fella so it doesn't rock my world as bad as it does to smaller folks.

Ultimately, shoot whatever your comfortable with and you'll be very dead accurate 9 out of 10 shots.
You can be very effective without all the garb they show on T.V. commercials or hunting shows. Everybody trying to sell somebody something they don't need. Very seldom are hunters in a position to shoot several thousand yards like a sniper anyway. Just engage your target in the kill zone is all it takes and less walking you do to find it!

GMan, the 300WSM you posted is the exact same one my dad used to have. Was a sweet gun, but he sold it this past year for a good turkey gun. The .270 he'll Never sell since it was his dad's. My dad is accurate to about 250yrds with it, but his dad could easily shoot groundhogs at 550-600. Thats because he shot it regularly Smile

Here are the 2 types of center fire's I use Ray. The green tips are 165gr loaded from Georgia Arms and the other is a Winchester silver tip 165gr. Zero with these and hunt with these. If you change bullet types and grain you best re-zero your rifle or expect to miss. remember, 1 shot, 1 kill and no "just missed stories"
