Time to get out the coyote caller !!
Well the shotgun seasons over here in Ohio for deer ! We can still hunt deer with the bow and then a late season muzzleloader hunt coming up yet sometime in January ! .. But I won't be working allot because of this cold weather and I need to kill some time so the coyotes and fox are on the hit list for now !! I will be using my savage 22-250 ! Those are pretty good coyote medicine ! And then I will also use my Marlin 30-30 lever action rifle ! It's a fun gun to shoot!!
Anyone on here ever call any yotes ? I never had much success I did already have some coming in but they circled down wind and got a wiff of me and left ! So if you know a thing or two on calling these guys I would like to hear it !

I used a FoxPro wildfire 2 call with a primo rabbit as a decoy in the winter. I have the best luck calling when it is 10 degrees or less and a foot or more snow on the ground. Set the decoy up with a little brush around it so they can see the movement but can't get a good view of it. Put a distressed rabbit call on and hunt for about 45 min. If nothing move to another area and repeat.

Hey thanks for the reply! I have an older electronic caller it's not a fox pro but it should get the job done ! Your rabbit decoy is it a moving one that flops around or just a rabbit? I like the idea of not having it in the wide open !! Just give them a little view of it and make them get up close to check it out! Also sounds like the colder it is and the more snow they probally will be trying to get any easy meal they can grab since food won't come by as easy! Thanks again !
Re: Time to get out the coyote caller !!
How long of a calling sequence do you do ? do you have the caller going the whole time your there or on and off??
Re: Time to get out the coyote caller !!
The decoys moves around. I will call for the entire time . Then if nothing I move if I shoot one I will wait about 30 minutes and let the call go again. Don't hunt the same areas to much they will get used to the call

Ok I wasn't sure if I should call for the whole 35-45 mins or just call on and off and what would you say is over hunting an area?
Re: Time to get out the coyote caller !!
I don't hunt an area more than once a month. I consider an area about 4 square miles on the plains and about 1 1/2 in the mountains.

Going out tomorrow for a all day hunt we are going to call as many different spots as we can and hopefully one of them will bring in some coyotes!!!

Good Luck! Coyote pics are really picking up, so they must be having to travel to find food.ray12 wrote:Going out tomorrow for a all day hunt we are going to call as many different spots as we can and hopefully one of them will bring in some coyotes!!!

Re: Time to get out the coyote caller !!
I went and bought myself an electronic caller that was a big upgrade from what I was using !! It's not the best caller out there but from what I read it has the most value for your money !! It's a Foxpro wildfire2 it can hold up to 200 sounds and it has fox bang wich allows you to set the remote to sence your shot and instantly switch over to a sound like a coyote in distress or some thing that will stop them for a second look! The caller does have some racoon sounds on it and I tried out the racoon fighting sound today and actually brought one of them things out of his den tree to investigate the fight!! And I was surprised to see one come out in this cold weather we are having!!!! So far I like the caller. Can't wait to try it on some coyotes !!
Re: Time to get out the coyote caller !!
Let us know how it goes. I might have to invest in a new caller as well :)The one we have now is OLD.
It uses tapes, and is Powerd by 12 D Batteries. (We barely ever use it )
