staying scent free
What do you guys all do to stay scent free while hunting ?? I usually try and keep my clothes all in a rubber made toat and keep the lid closed tight .. I wear rubber boots (they dont hold scent like leather) and then i spray myself with a scent killer .. It seems to work out good for the most part but if any of you guys would have a better idea i would like to hear them!!

I myself use scent killer spray every time i go out. But it is pretty much impossible to escape a deers sense of smell. I dont care how much killer u have on if the deer is downwind u'll get busted. Play ur winds right and u should be fine.

Agreed, pudge. Now you cant control how badly they get spooked. I use a card board box and put leaves in with all my clothing. I also do the scent spray thing. I take a plain water shower before i hunt as well. Play the winds right, take some precautions, you'll be fine

I try and keep my clothes in a plastic tote with mabey a few leaves and stuff and i use scent killer spray but the deer will still bust you (most times) if you dont set up according to the wind!! But if you learn how to use the wind to help you , you will be getting allot more deer walk on by without ever noticing you!!

Re: staying scent free
Last year I started smoking my clothes. Just built a fire and hung my clothes in the smokes path. I still store them in plastic totes and that smoke smell lasts a year. Went to wash and smoke my clothes a couple weeks ago and they still had a strong smoke smell. When a deer did wind me it could never pinpoint my location. It would walk ever direction with it's nose in the air, but could never find the source of the smell. Of course the deer would move on, but not be as spooked when it left since it was not 100 percent sure of the source. I'm a hardcore smoker now and it helps that I hunt urban areas where someone is always burning.

Have not had them alert from it, but in my area's people are always burning leaves/brush, trash, and wood for heat in the winter, so smoke is natural smell for them.ray12 wrote:I see allot of guys do that . Does the smoke smell alert deer?

Re: staying scent free
Would see like a cheap yet affective way to stay scent free then!
You probally want to burn wood that doesnt have a strong smell to it just something that burns good and clean?

I like to burn some sticks to get a bed of coals and then go get some old damp leaves from the previous fall (I get them around a shed or fence row where they have collected) and dump them on the coals. Stand back and watch the smoke roll. Also smoke my bow case, so my bow will always smell of smoke. May need to shower after you hunt because that smoke smell soaks into your skin from your clothes. Can make it hard sleeping at night laying there smelling like a brush fire all night long lol.
