Mossberg 500 Vs the remington 870
Whats your opinion on these two guns , is it worth the extra money for the remington 870?
I have the Mossberg 500 and it shoots just as good as the remington 870 if not a bit better! Both are good guns IMO but the remington feels more like a solid well built gun compared to the 500!
Wich of these do you guys prefer ?

I abuse the crap out of my hunting shotguns. Used them for boat paddles, duck retrieval devices, walking sticks, and literally drag them through the mud. I have ran them over, I leave them in the bed of the truck for weeks at a time and clean them once a year or so. I had a Mossberg for one season. It was junk IMO. The safety was so stiff you about needed a hammer and screwdriver to drive it back and forth, it rattled, and was so light that it kicked like a mule.
That being said, shooting paper, it did pattern better than the 870 that I have, not much, but a little.
I have an 870 of my dads that he bought new in the late 80s, he treated it worse than I do. It has never failed to shoot. I have literally had that gun so covered in ice that I had to put it on my knee to shuck the shells out but it still shot every time I pulled the trigger. One of they guys I hunted with on one of those days had a Mossberg 835 and the rails actually bent completely out when he tried that.
Needless to say, I prefer Remington 870s. I now shoot a Browning BPS 90% of the time though.

I have never been that rough on my mossbergs lol ! But none of them gave me a problem yet! They get oiled and wiped clean after each hunt! The safteys on them are not as stiff as they used to be and the flip on and off like I like to have a saftey work!

I can see where the Remington would hold up longer to that kind of abuse !! But I like my 500 to there good guns if you take care of them!! I don't know how the Benelli shotguns hold up but they shoot and feel good ! I don't think Benelli puts there name on junk ! They have some good shotguns but I have no idea how that they hold up !
Re: Mossberg 500 Vs the remington 870
I haven't touched a Benelli in several years. I hunt with a guy that used to shoot one. After his jammed while turkey hunting for the 3rd time, he traded it for a Remington Versamax. I don't know if it was just his gun or what the deal was. He had a gunsmith clean it after every time it jammed so we know it wasn't dirty. It wouldn't cycle light loads at all. This was one of the first Benelli's I ever saw so they have probably drastically improved since that model. The automatics feel good to me and if I decide to switch to an auto I will either get a Benelli or a Beretta.

Re: Mossberg 500 Vs the remington 870
We have waaay to many Mossbergs and love 'em....never a problem.
1st one is a 500 BullPup
2nd one is the 20" 500 (lives on a quad)
3rd is a 590 that is a family fave but I still would like a colapsible stock on it to shorten it up a bit.
I know what you mean about the safeties, all a little different but manageable.
There are a few more but this pic was handy.

I have heard some good things on the 590s! are they a tough gun?
Re: Mossberg 500 Vs the remington 870
590's a little tougher than the 500's...barrel mounting is different and trigger gaurd etc, but the 590A1 has a heavy barrel and even a better trigger gauard and safety.

Re: Mossberg 500 Vs the remington 870
ah yeah it was the 590A1 that people say is a tough gun! would you compare that to the 870 or is it better then the 870
Re: Mossberg 500 Vs the remington 870
IMO, beefier in every way, but the 870 is a great scatter too!
